What to Send on the First Anniversary of a Death

Remembering With You sympathy flowers by Perfect Petals Brisbane

The first anniversary of a death often arrives quietly. For everyone else it's an ordinary day. For the person grieving, it can feel like reliving the loss all over again.

If someone you care about is coming up to that date, you might be wondering whether to say anything at all. The short answer: yes. A small gesture on the day almost always means more than you expect.

Why the first anniversary matters so much

The first year after a loss is a year of firsts: the first birthday, the first Christmas, the first holidays without them. The anniversary marks the end of that year, and many people say it's the hardest day of all.

What often hurts most is the feeling that everyone else has forgotten. A message, a visit or flowers on the day tells them that their loved one is still remembered, and so are they.

Gentle ideas for the day

Flowers with a short card. Flowers sit on the kitchen bench for a week or more, a quiet reminder that someone cared. Soft colours and seasonal blooms feel calmer than a formal arrangement.

A plant or something lasting. A peace lily or potted orchid is something they can keep, and some people like having a living reminder.

A meal or a coffee. Drop round dinner, or invite them out for a coffee near the date. Company can matter more than any gift.

A memory, written down. If you knew the person who died, write down a favourite memory and send it. People treasure these.

Simply asking. "Would you like company on the day, or would you rather some space?" lets them choose.

What to write on the card

Keep it short and honest. You don't need to fix anything.

  • "Thinking of you today, and remembering [Name] with love."
  • "A year on, [Name] is still so missed. I'm here for you."
  • "No need to reply. I just wanted you to know I haven't forgotten."
  • "Remembering [Name] today and always."

Using their loved one's name is one of the kindest things you can do. Most people avoid it, and grieving families often say they long to hear it.

What to avoid

  • Telling them how they should feel by now.
  • Big surprise gestures that put them on the spot.
  • Waiting to be asked. Most people won't ask.

Remember the date without the pressure

The hardest part is often remembering the date at all. Life gets busy, and the anniversary can slip past before you realise.

That's why we created Remembering With You. When you order sympathy flowers through Perfect Petals, you can choose to have us return on the first anniversary, or at 6 months and on the anniversary. We keep the dates for you and email you two weeks before each delivery to check the address and card message.
