When Is the Right Time to Send Sympathy Flowers?
The quick answer – there is no wrong time.
When someone has experienced a loss, it’s natural to want to offer comfort. But many
people are unsure if there is an ‘etiquette’ and when the right time is to send sympathy flowers. Is it before the funeral? After? A week later?
At Perfect Petals, we’re asked these questions a lot. Here’s our guideline to help you decide when your floral gesture will be most meaningful.
Immediately After the Loss
Sending flowers as soon as you hear the news is a beautiful way to express your
condolences early on. These arrangements are usually delivered to the home and offer a
comforting expression of support in the initial days of grief. We suggest that something sent in its own water source is the best, most practical, way to deliver flowers to the home. As they’re most likely receiving a lot of floral sympathy gestures all at once, and in most cases, simply running out of vases to put them in. We will always suggest either a vase bouquet or arrangement.
For the Funeral or Memorial Service
If you know the date and location of the service, it’s appropriate to send flowers directly to
the funeral home or service venue. Funeral sheafs, wreaths, or formal arrangements work
well in this context — especially in whites or soft tones. If you knew the deceased more than their family, a beautiful heart shaped tribute or the like, is a lovely way to honour them. The family will always be given the message cards that accompany all of the floral tributes if they choose for the flowers to stay at the memorial site.
In the Weeks After the Funeral
Grief often deepens in the quiet that follows the funeral. A thoughtful bouquet sent one or
two weeks after the service can serve as a gentle reminder that the person is still held in
love and thought. These are especially appreciated as the crowds subside and daily life
resumes.
On Anniversaries or Milestones
Whether it’s one month or one year later, remembering someone on an anniversary can
mean the world. The first anniversary of a loved one’s passing is especially heartbreaking.
Sending flowers on these meaningful dates honours both the person who has passed and
the ongoing grief of their loved ones. Letting them know that you remember this date too
can be one of the most loving and comforting acts of kindness as they live through this
dreaded day.
No Wrong Time to Show You Care
There’s no perfect moment — only your intention to offer kindness and comfort. Trust that
whatever time you choose, your sincere and loving gesture will be received with warmth.
